The Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Position.

On the surface, Lux could seem closer to a difficult academic quiz rather than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a previous hit featured an international K-pop star. Divided into four separate movements and sung in 13 tongues, this is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of different women saints. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward here, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the work of other artists seem rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album manages to transcend dry academic posturing is almost a miracle, and sole credit going to the artist. While it's not the first time project to blend the past and the present, the ambitions are far greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to be right there through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes in like comedic impact. The song immediately segues to the frenetic track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that the listener never quite understand—or even wish to know—where you is going to next."

Almost each song finishes at a totally distinct point from how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier rhythmic style begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track sung entirely in English swells on a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This feat gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While some major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
