The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
