European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
