At least 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
